Portola is a relatively new addition to San Francisco’s music scene, first taking place in 2022 at Pier 80. Focused primarily on electronic and dance music, the festival brings together established and emerging artists from across the genre. Its unique waterfront setting and focus on electronic music have helped Portola establish its own identity within San Francisco’s festival culture.

This year’s festival featured major artists including Robyn, Swedish House Mafia, Tiësto, Dog Blood, Fatboy Slim, and Zara Larsson. Across the two days, the different stages created a variety of atmospheres, from high-energy electronic sets to more pop-oriented performances. The energy throughout Pier 80 remained constant, with crowds dancing, singing, and moving between stages. Performances such as Robyn’s crowd sing-along and Swedish House Mafia’s closing set captured the excitement that defined the festival as a whole.

From our perspective, attending Portola gave us the opportunity to experience that atmosphere firsthand. The combination of the music, crowd, and waterfront setting made the festival feel like more than a collection of performances. Being part of such a large and enthusiastic audience showed us how electronic music can create a shared experience and bring people together. Ultimately, our experience at Portola gave us a greater appreciation for both the music and the community surrounding it.
