In 2020, we had to confront the reality that working from home was no longer the exception, it was the norm. As we adjusted to life outside the office, we became accustomed to the convenience and comfort of working from home, while also becoming more conscious of how our spaces looked and functioned. The boundaries between work and home became increasingly blurred, forcing us to reconsider what a workspace could look like.

Enter Mason Holden, industrial designer and founder of Friday Furniture. While working from home himself, he recognized that the commute, despite its inconveniences, serves an important purpose: separation. The transition between home and office creates a natural boundary that makes it easier to switch off at the end of the day. But when your office is also your living room or bedroom, that separation becomes much harder to achieve. Holden began exploring how furniture could help restore that distinction without requiring a dedicated room.

That thinking is what makes the Clamshell 36 and 48 desks so unique. Rather than treating a desk as a permanent fixture within the home, he approaches it as a piece that can coexist with the lifestyle surrounding it. The Clamshell 36 in particular balances this idea through its specialized bent-wood construction, using a distinctive curved outline to give the desk a softer presence within the home while maintaining the functionality required of a modern workspace.

The curve, however, is more than an aesthetic approach. One of the key challenges in developing the Clamshell 36 was determining the minimum bend radius of the wood, particularly around the monitor. he designed the desk to accommodate an Apple Studio Display with a VESA mount, as well as the 24-inch VESA iMac, requiring the curvature to work within specific functional constraints. The result is a carefully resolved piece where construction, proportion, and usability inform the final form rather than simply following it.

That attention to detail makes the Clamshell desks feel particularly relevant to the way we live and work today. He understands the importance of having a workspace that provides the satisfaction and ease of a well-designed office without allowing work to completely take over the home. Through its considered construction and subtle separation between work and living, the Clamshells becomes more than a desk, it becomes an important factor in designing a better home and work environment.
