Elujay

For Elujay, every song begins with intention. His meticulous approach to craft and unwavering attention to detail shape a sound that feels deeply personal, but beyond the production, it's the emotion that matters most. Each piece is an opportunity to capture a feeling, creating music that invites listeners into a genuine moment of expression.

That instinct goes back to Jentrify, his 2016 debut mixtape, which came out of the Bay Area hip hop scene and carried an early swagger before he'd fully found his singing voice. By 2019's Adojio, he'd settled into the soul-rooted sound that's defined him since, and Gems in the Cornerstore, his 2020 EP with J.Robb as JEMS!, turned that partnership into one of the throughlines of his career. Circmvnt followed in 2022, a debut album written in the middle of the pandemic, and his latest work, A Constant Charade, marks his first solo release on drink sum wtr, a project built over three years and featuring collaborators like serpentwithfeet.

In Episode 45, we sit down with him to talk through that arc, how his creative trajectory has taken shape project by project, and what it means to build a body of work defined by constant reinvention. He opens up about his process, the intentionality behind each decision, and what it takes to make music that grapples with something as specific as social performance and code switching while still landing as instinctive and unforced. It's a conversation about an artist who has never been interested in repeating himself, and what that restlessness has cost and given him along the way.

For him, authenticity has always come before anything else, the sound leads and everything follows from there. That consistency is what makes his story worth telling, and it's exactly what will keep carrying his work forward. he isn't just an artist on the rise. He's an artist building something that lasts.
